Responsibilities:
Sidewalking:
- Assist the instructor or therapist with the rider to help insure their safety
- Help rider follow the directions of the instructor or therapist
- Help ensure rider, horse and volunteer safety before, during, and after class
Leading:
Upon completion of three months of sidewalking, select individuals with be trained to lead horses in therapy sessions.
Qualifications:
- A positive attitude, open mind and an appreciation for differences in people and horses
- Minimum of 13 years old
- Physical Requirements
o Ability to walk for 30 minutes at a time (indoors and outdoors) on uneven surfaces
o Have adequate vision to ensure safety of horse and participants
o Comfortable interacting with and supporting individuals with disabilities
o Be able to lift up to 20 pounds above head
- Ability to hear, understand, and follow instructions in English
- Completion of application and signed waiver
Required Training:
- Attend introductory and sidewalking training; both are required for ALL Program Volunteers before working with horses and riders.
Time frame:
- Minimum 2 hours per week for length of the 8 to 12 week session
